Created in 1986 by the French Ministry of Culture, Orchestre National de Jazz (ONJ) is one of the leading jazz large ensemble in Europe. Since 2019, the orchestra is led by composer Frédéric Maurin.

This never saw the light of day way back in 1969…I remember seeing John Surman play many times in that period in many configurations…but perhaps not like this! It’s a wonderful find (it’s been in the Cuneiform catalogue for a good while now) but I reckon it’s worth bringing it to the fore again, especially in light of the recent Soft Machine release.

Obviously one of the "lighter", groovier albums of the late Elton Dean of Soft Machine-fame, but in a good way. This has been compared to Medeski, Martin and Wood and that's a good reference point (at least for theorgan-driven 35 minutes opening the album) . And of course: Happy holidays and a splendid New Year to everyone at Cuneiform records :-) Thanks for the great music!

I knew I wanted the album about 30 seconds into Hazard Profile. A wonderful example of their brilliance live, but I had trouble selecting a favorite track because almost the entire album sounds like one long multi-part song (like the second side of Abbey Road).
